1994 — The Winningest Team
With a 37-13 record, the Stars amassed their best victory total ever, winning the Western Regionals and placing llth at the NBC event in Wichita. Former Kansas City Royals pitcher Craig Chamberlain pitched a tourney-high 24 1/3 innings, fanning 20, and earned the Most Sportsmanlike Athlete award. Earlier in the summer, the team placed third in the Kamloops, BC tourney and former Minnesota Twins pitcher Rick Lysander won the opening game in the Stars' efforts at the Kelowna, BC tourney. A week-long trek to Alaska was highlighted by the annual Midnight Sun game with the Alaska Goldpanners. A two-run homer by Ted Holverson gave the Stars an 8-6 win and Shane Hobbs hit a homer to pace a 7-4 victory over the Anchorage Bucs later that week. Perhaps the biggest cause for celebration came earlier in the spring when Stars first baseman Eddie Williams was signed by the San Diego Padres. Williams, released by the Padres earlier in his career, eventually hit over .300 for the Padres later that season.
1995 — Memorable Victories
A three-run homer by Robert Tucker keyed a 7-4 win over the Santa Barbara Forresters in the Western Regional finals as the Stars won a doubleheader on a 100-degree day in Lake Havasu, Ariz. A grand slam homer and four other hits by Hobbs helped the Stars rally from a 6-1 deficit in the opener. While the Stars' college-aged players were losing two games at the NBC World Series, an alumni club man-aged by Steve Newark took the Grand Nationals at San Diego State as Lysander earned the win in the finals over Fullerton. Over Labor Day weekend, the Stars placed second at the Grand Forks International as former San Diego Padres pitcher Dan Boone made the All-Tourney team. National exposure was attained by the Stars when they played the Colorado Silver Bullets All-Women's team in an exhibition contest at the Lake Elsinore Diamond. Cole Holland, Josh Paulino, Brian Sos, Steve Rohlmeier and Hobbs got two hits each and Jon Rauterkus hit a two-run homer as San Diego outscored the Bullets 11-7. Craig Pinley got the win with two scoreless innings of pitching. The Stars ended their busy summer in Tijuana, Mexico, losing a game to the Mexican National team. Individually, Rohlmeier won three All-Tourney awards and pitcher Gary Marshall earned a pro contract with the Chicago Cubs.
